How you hope to support the Buddy Programme and why you chose to be a Buddy?
The Buddy Programme is the great initiative to make new students comfortable and be at ease. I will be supporting this programme by being a friend and guide to new students who will be seeking support in a faraway land. I hope to be their confidante and ensure that their needs are met to the best of my abilities. I want to help them in adjusting to a new culture, find important places of use to them and establish a good rapport for better understanding.
As an International student, I had gone through Culture Shock and initial difficulty in adjusting here. However, by a gradual increase in interaction with the local people, I shed my inhibitions. This made me realise the importance of providing a support to newcomers who need a shoulder to lean on during the initial days of landing here. Hence, I chose to become a Buddy and do my bit for the Student Fraternity.
What do you like about Toi Ohomai and New Zealand?
Toi Ohomai Institute has proved to be an ideal place to study by honing my Intellectual and Creative senses. The tutors here give us a freedom to think and express our views without any bias. The Non – Academic staff too is very friendly and supportive.
New Zealand is a warm country with hospitable people. All the places are neat and well maintained. There are several tourist attractions here and good places to shop around. With time this country does feel like a second home.
What challenges have you faced?
The greatest challenge I had faced was finding a suitable and affordable accommodation as the system of Property Mangement is different here from India. I also had initial difficulty in understanding the Bus Route systems and comprehending the local accent. However, after seeking help from peers and seniors all the issues were sorted out.
